Ceduna, Smoky Bay, views of South Australia

Ceduna and Smoky Bay, a partial rest day, moving east towards more populated South Australia with Adelaide in sight, almost!

Ceduna, another milestone, located about 1900 kilometers east of our start in Perth and 15 days into the ride.  Seems like ages ago, we stopped for an overnight on the drive to Perth, it feels a bit familiar. It’s also a real town and not just a Road House, not a big town, approximately 2000 people, but our first significant town since leaving Perth. We got to town early in the afternoon and had a chance to get a pre-dinner pizza snack across from the Ceduna Visitor Centre. The visitor centre supplied the official, signed, and notarized certificates proclaiming our Across the Nullarbor. Thanks, Bushy, for organizing the stop.

I will remember Ceduna for two great dinners at the Foreshore Hotel, one when we stopped driving west and one to start a rest day on the ride east. (Tasty oysters, good choice Scotty) Plus, great sunsets looking out over Murat Bay. This small town got me thinking about Adelaide, a planned two-day rest stop, just 4 days from Ceduna. From Ceduna east the traffic will start to pick up, the roads will get marginally wider, we will ride through more towns that will continue to get bigger as the ride continues.

My chance for filming videos has come to an unfortunate pause as the mount for the GoPro succumbed to the rough roads and to me constantly trying to readjust it into filming position. Good luck finding any GoPro accessories until we get to a big city, Adelaide. You will have to check in with Scotty and Bushy for video content for this chunk of the journey to Adelaide.

Photos will have to do except for a video the day we left Smoky Bay when I was standing out side our guest lodge listening to the wind howl and hoping it would be a tail wind. We got some tail wind, some cross wind.

Speaking of Smoky Bay, the actual Ceduna rest day location. All rooms were taken in Ceduna for our second overnight, so our rest day became a short, sunny, casual 44-kilometer ride from Ceduna to a fishing town, Smokey Bay. Not ideal for rest, but in hind sight, Smoky Bay was a highlight of the trip. Great Airbnb, plenty of room, we got to the lodging with enough time to have a casual afternoon off, mostly doing some well needed bike maintenance. We made a pasta dinner from our ration of food supplies. Dinner was pushing the limits of food allergies and sensitivities but all in all, it turned out tasty and filling with no negative reactions thank goodness.

A good, restful night’s sleep in a comfy bed with an early wakeup call and back on the road through Streaky Bay, yes Smoky Bay and Streaky Bay are “side by side” towns about 70 k apart and then on to another town, Minnipa SA, for a total of 155 k’s for the day. Scotty and I had a little sprint match time on the road out of Streaky Bay. (You will have to ask Scotty or Bushy about that) Can’t forget to have fun on a bike.
