The few days off in Eucla WA/Border Village SA, two road houses/hotels/pub/restaurants straddling the Western Australia and South Australia border was a very welcome time for me, Bushy and Scotty as well, I’m sure. I still think about looking west out over the seabed plain that we crossed to get here. Stark, endless beauty. Didn’t hurt to be able to also look south to the Southern Ocean. The accommodations were a bit more generous in Eucla compared to Border Village (we stayed at Border Village on the drive west a few weeks prior.) The food, a bit better at Border Village only a 5-to-10-kilometer drive east from Eucla. Having two options for food was a treat, alternating breaky, lunch and dinner.
The uploaded pictures and 2 videos are just another great memory, much better than counting sheep. One of the two videos Scotty sums up the 197 k one day ride from Eucla to Nullabor Road house, the only next lodging on our way east. The other video, a reminder of the road trains we encountered along the only road across this part of the continent. As Scotty says, a few boxes checked, rode across all of WA, rode the longest straight road in Australia, 146 kilometers, the ancient seabed plain just west of Eucla, and after the 197.4-kilometer ride to Nullabor Road House from Eucla, our first day in Southern Australia. Happy smiles to finish the day.
The next day, a 145-kilometer ride to a more spartan road house, Nundroo. We had one, three bed motel room booked but when we checked in, we found an interesting smell and then found the carpet to be drenched. All the previous days rain must have washed in under the door. I wasn’t as excited about getting to Nundroo compared to Nullabor R.H. and after yesterday’s 200 k day (122 miles), todays 145 k day (90 miles) wasn’t as energetic for me at least. Lost our tail winds as well so it turned into a long, 7 plus hour day from start to finish bike time.
Everyday an adventure!
